Description : Understanding the basics of the Maya program
Students will be introduced (and analyzed) to the interface + the philosophy of the Maya program, as well as methods of 3D modeling, texturing, lighting, visualization (rendering) and animation. The lectures discuss various applications of the studied tools/functionality - in visual special effects (VFX), in the gaming and animation industries. During the course, students will work on several different projects.
*Note - Students in this course will qualify for a free (and full) 3-year student license for Autodesk products. Please download the curriculum and visit the Autodesk website for more information. Confirmation of your participation in the training program can be issued upon request.
What will you learn
Sunday 1 | Maya interface
Scene and Project Management | Editors, viewports and menus | Navigation and toolboxes (toolbars) | Students will practice installing/configuring individual/specific shelf buttons, hotkeys, label menus and try to create a basic model.
Week 2 | Modeling methods and approaches
Creating a 3D mesh and editing tools | Retopology Tools | Students will try to create a simple robot
Week 3 | Best Modeling Techniques/Practices
Overview of surface types (NURBS, polygonal, subdivisions (subD)) | Cube based modeling | Students will finish developing a robot
Week 4 | Preparing to work with materials
Creating a Texture UV Map | Materials, textures and hypershade editor (hypershade) | Students will UV unwrap the robot, preparing the model to mark the materials on its surface.
Week 5 | Materials
2D and 3D textures | Bump, displacement, normal maps | Maya and Arnold shaders | 3D drawing | Paint effects | Shader schematic | Students will assign shaders (materials, textures) to their robots
Week 6 | Lighting and visualization (rendering)
Lighting | Cameras | The shooting has begun! (Just kidding - the animation will be in chapter 8) | Render in Maya | Render in Arnold | Students will try to set up lighting and visualize the scene.
Sunday 7 | Rigging
Joints | Forward and inverse kinematics (IK/FK) | Binding to Bones | Blendshapes | Deformers | Students implement a control system (rig) for their characters
Week 8 | Animation
Animation editors | New timing editor | Motion capture technique | Inverse kinematics (IK) applied to the human skeleton | Students will try to animate their characters
Week 9 | FX (Effects)
Paint effects | Bullet physics | Nucleus (Nuklias) physics| Students, using the nCloth module, will add a cloak/cape to their characters, which will not only complement the model, but also move during animation
Sunday 10 | Motion Graphics
MASH module | Sound | Students will experiment with the latest Maya tools
