IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE CRAZY AT WORK is divided into a brief beginning and end, with five parts in between. 1. Curb Your Ambition: Living by the cutthroat American business practices currently popular is a choice. In this section, we examine the other side of the success coin. What happens when we just don't want to play that game? What happens is you can craft a business with a very different culture, where you and your employees can be happy and healthy and successful without it having to be at the expense of others.
2. Defend Your Time: A huge part of American corporate culture is this sort of glamour surrounding killing oneself in the name of work. Long hours, working weekends, being available during vacation.these practices produce burned out, exhausted employees. In this section, the authors discuss founding their company on an 8-hour day and 40-hour week with mandatory vacations. They made it happen by only committing to work that can be done within those parameters.Basecamp and its employees are happier and healthier for it.
3. Feed Your Culture: Once you have decided to have this mellow company with healthy time boundaries for everyone, you need to keep your work culture clean. This section examines many issues that can potentially sabotage the process. By being proactive, you can avoid pitfalls that can sneak in and poison your employees' relationships with each other, ruin your hiring process, and/or make your office an arena of chaos. Human nature is what it is, but you can get out in front of it.
4. Dissect Your Process: One of the reasons American corporate culture is so unhealthy is that systems get locked into patterns of behavior. There are two problems with that. First, when expectations become unrealistic in a closed system, the only place for the stress to go is into the system itself. Second, the belief that this kind of brittle, dysfunctional system is normal is perpetuated. The authors say, "Not true!" Really pay attention to your policies and procedures and make sure things still make sense. Adaptation and change is necessary over time.
5. Mind Your Business: This section examines all the ways you can maintain your company over time in a healthy manner. Work is hard. You want to be successful. It takes some planning and forethought to make that happen. This is another section to help you think and plan ahead of time to start with (or transition to) a strong foundation.
