The first Knockout Week gets underway, as the 12 chefs to have made it through the previous 12 episodes are brought together for the first time to face far greater challenges. First up is an Invention Test in which they must design one outstanding dish from a bountiful larder of ingredients including pigeons, ox cheek, squid, prawns and a whole host of fruit and vegetables. This will win seven chefs a ticket to the next round, while the others face further challenges to stay in the contest. The ten who survive today’s tests will go on to show off their culinary and creative skills in a pop-up restaurant. It’s an especially tough challenge: you may remember that even last year’s winner, Nikita Pathakji, struggled to serve her Vietnamese bun cha (delicious though everyone said it was). By the end of Thursday, the chefs will have been reduced to eight.
