A new set of contestants enter the kitchen to show of their skills in the hope of making it through to the quarter-finals. Tasks involve turning a humble set of ingredients, including short ribs, onions and chicken thighs, into a showstopper of a dish and a mystery box containing tinned pineapple, ham and sweetcorn. Those that make it through get the chance to cook a two-course meal for 2011 champion Tim Anderson, 2013 champion Natalie Coleman and 2013 finalist Larkin Cen.

The next group of amateur cooks, including a personal trainer, carer and teacher, step into the kitchen. Their first task sees them transforming an everyday ingredient into something special, with the best two awarded a MasterChef apron and storming into the next round. The rest face the mystery box, with parsnip, strawberries and chicken livers on offer as key ingrediants. As ever, only two will make it through to the last stage, cooking a two-course meal for 2007 series champion Steven Wallis, 2020 champion Thomas Frake and 2018 semi-finalist Nisha Parmar.

The second quarter-final sees restaurant critic Grace Dent make a gracious return to set the brief. Inspired by memories of times in the Lake District with her mother, she wants the contenders to create the perfect picnic, which must include two savoury items and one sweet. Imagination can truly run wild with this one, but Grace expects everything to taste completely dreamy. These are her childhood memories, after all. The cooks have 90 minutes to push the boat out and put a smile on Grace's face. Those who impress in the kitchen the most will be rewarded with a place in knockout week.
