Requirements
This course was designed for business practitioners. We assume real-world business experience as a prerequisite.
Description
This is a tools and techniques, self-directed workshop and therefore is "theory light and application heavy. The 60+ minutes of video will introduce each of the thirty-seven exercise that will take you from drafting a rough problem statement through using an after-action review to embed learning in you and your organization. During this course we will take you through four phases of work aimed at resolving your complex problem: 1) Context, Diagnosis, and Problem Definition, 2)Developing Alternative Solutions. 3) Alternative Solution Selection, 4) Implementation and Learning. Differentiating symptoms from the real problems is at the heart of problem resolution. Too often try to relieve troublesome symptoms and think we are solving problems. The problems remain and symptom relief is short-lived. For example, the "problem" of decreased profitability is always a symptom associated with revenue or cost problems. An since cost is so easy to quantify we often attack costs. And that often leads to unintended consequences. ("Lean and mean" often ends in "lean and anorexic.) We also challenge you to provide answers to seventeen questions that will examine the thoroughness of your problem solving work. Answer these questions with brutal honesty and be prepared to think deeper about the problems you are trying resolve.
